    I heavily disagree with Rep. Holden’s comment that “No one could have predicted what happened in September 2008 with the financial markets.” I’ve heard plenty of others say the same thing. You can say that if it makes you feel better about our collective egregious lack of responsible behavior and leadership, but some people *did* predict what was going to happen. Even non-economists like myself could see that the subprime mortgage fiasco – when we decided it was a great idea to give people mortgages on oversized houses with no down payments and adjustable interest rates – was bound to cause major economic disruptions. Why is it that the people who did, in fact, see this coming – James Howard Kunstler, for example – aren’t given any credit? For far too long (and even still today), we’ve been too focused on “growth” at all costs. Our focus should be on sustainability first, along with the recognition and planning that natural resources are limited. I am glad to see that the Obama administration is putting serious efforts on more sustainable transportation and living arrangements. It’s too bad we squandered so many resources and got into so much debt before we finally started thinking about sustainability.
