The beaded tigers of Sergey Shepelenko
Sergey Shepelenko is an excavator driver at the Mining Benefication Complex of OJSC “ArcelorMittal Kryviy Rih”. For a man, you might say that he has an extraordinary hobby. But Sergey recently became a laureate at the ‘Constellation of Talents’, the festival of applied arts which was held at the company headquarters. Sergey presents: his beaded pictures.
“I have been embroidering for several years,” Sergey tells us. “Probably the reason for that is the hard work I have been doing since I was 16. My soul needed relaxation in the form of some home art. I remember the unstable 1990s, when the financial situation of my own family was tough. It was then that I mastered the different types of hand knitting machines and worked on them, to the benefit of our family budget. Dresses, suits, jumpers, leggings; my wife and daughter supported me and wore my pieces of art gladly.”
“But I will hardly earn a living from this hobby,” says Sergei with a smile. “Take my tiger piece which I submitted to the contest; the embroidery is made up of 230 rows with 180 beads in each, so in total 41,400 beads! In all I spent 180 hours on this piece. I can’t even imagine how much that sort of labour can cost, but this is a pleasure for me. It is a radical change compared with my normal daily chores, but this hobby is available to everyone – just try it!”

You’re an inspiration! So many people think they only can come home to watch tv and go to bed . . . there are many hours after work (okay, not as many as we’d all like ; 0 . . but they can be used to do creative and relaxing things that add more to your life and to others. Keep up the beautiful work!
