Boxing against violence in Palestine: Round Two
Around this time last year, we told you the story of Jean-Louis Paron, our technician colleague from ArcelorMittal Gandrange, France. Last summer, he travelled to the Far East to help local children forget their reality for a while. How? By teaching them to “fight against violence”. Discover how this bold commitment lives on in 2009.
From July 13 to 28, 2009, Jean Louis Paron, together with a delegation of the FGST – the French Workers’ Sports Movement – went to Palestine, within the framework of the ‘Sport Fraternité’ project. Through this initiative, volunteers such as Jean-Louis organise a series of sports activities for local children: from soccer to handball, volleyball to gymnastics, athletics… and boxing!
“My greatest pleasure is to share my passion for boxing,” Jean-Louis told us last year. That is why he decided to reiterate his commitment in 2009 in the streets of Hebron, Naplouse, Tulkarem, Ramallah and Gaza, with the aim to fight against violence and share a message of peace among the affected populations.
With an ongoing context of occupation and fragmentation of the territory, the situation remains very fragile in Palestine. The population is still deprived of several basic services such as education, which means that the children are once again the first victims.
In such a context, sports and leisure activities are often out of reach. That is exactly where Jean-Louis and other volunteers come in, to the great pleasure of the young boys and girls. In fact, such play activities allow them – even if only for a while – to forget their tough realities and reclaim their precious childhood.

This initiative taken by Jean-Louis is remarkable. The interest in sports at this directionless periods of unrest will definitely help the children ( who are there to make tomorrow) to keep positive attitude and keep way from violence. Thanks for all the team members for such an initiative.
