ArcelorMittal Asturias dam to be venue for 2010 European Senior Canoe Sprint Championships
The Santa Cruz de Trasona dam, 1 of 3 dams that ArcelorMittal owns in Asturias (Spain), plays a role not only in supplying water to our facilities, but also as the perfect shelter for a large variety of fauna and flora, and… a great place for canoe practice.
Built in the 1950s to supply water to the Avilés factory, the Santa Cruz de Trasona dam measures more than 500 m in width and length, has a capacity of 4.1 cubic hectormetres and covers a surface area of 784,400 m2.
The company actively contributes to the protection of the natural habitat of local species, such as herons and ducks. It’s a very beautiful place that also allows for the practice of nautical sports – from canoeing to windsurfing – among the oak, pine and eucalyptus trees that grow along its banks.
The European Senior Canoe Sprint Championships will take place from June 30 until July 4, 2010. ArcelorMittal has handed the dam over to the Asturias Principality Government and will collaborate with the Royal Spanish Canoe Federation to make the calm water Championships a success.
Water, steel and sport, in perfect harmony: a good show of ArcelorMittal Asturias’ commitment to the environment.
