Steel generations XIV – Meet George E Adey“My name is George E Adey Jr, and I am a third generation steelworker.  I think steel has been in our family because of the example set by the preceding generation: hard work, dedication, and long hours got you a good wage, good benefits, and a chance to give your family more than you had. For most of the 20th Century, my family has contributed to the building and defense of this country, and the world…

Today, I am a Process Helper and Scale Breaker Operator at ArcelorMittal’s Burns Harbor steel plant. In September 2009, I will have 32 years of service at the plant. I am passionate about steel as a matter of survival. I always look for products made from steel if possible. I also try to buy from companies to whom we supply steel.

Before me, my grandfather, George Adey, and his brothers Harry and Riley all worked in steel for more than 40 years. My father, George E. Adey Sr., finished his 33 year career at the Burns Harbor steel plant, where my mother, Patricia, also worked 14 years.  Over the years the steel industry has been very good to me. As I was growing up, my father’s wages and benefits left us healthy and needing little.

I can say the same now for my own family. I have 2 grown daughters who grew up not wanting for much. They always had quality healthcare, lived in decent neighborhoods, and had a chance for a good education. I feel I owe all this to my union job in the steel industry. My job is also allowing me now to spoil 3 grandchildren who just may be the next generation in steel…”
