In the run up to the US elections, Bettye gave up her evenings and weekends to answer phones, stuff envelopes and knock on doors in Southern Indiana and Illinois as a volunteer for the Barack Obama national campaign.

It was a dream come true when she and her family received 4 invitations to the US presidential inauguration on January 20, 2009. “Sen. Christopher J. Dodd of Connecticut arranged for us to attend the inauguration because of my father’s service during World War II and my mother’s civil rights work with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,” said Bettye. “When my sister phoned me to tell me the good news, I was so excited!”

Bettye traveled to the nation’s capital with her 89-year-old father and 3 sisters. They stood in front of the Capitol building in the extreme cold for over 9 hours and soaked up the atmosphere.

“I have experienced many wonderful things in my life, but this event exceeds them all,” said Bettye. “Seeing my father cry as he witnessed an African American become president, is something I will never forget.”

A family with over half a century involvement in key world events!!

Now that is a legacy. I am glad your father was able to attend and share the moment in time with you.
