In September, the city of Ostrava, once known as the ‘steel heart of the Republic’, made the first step to becoming the ‘green’ heart of the Czech Republic. The time has come to discover how…

Following a promise made by ArcelorMittal to plant new trees for plastic cups collected at the local music festival held this summer, Sanjay Samaddar, Chairman of the Board of Directors, ArcelorMittal Ostrava planted the first of a series of trees on September 22. And with its majestic 5 meters-height, the tree literally symbolized the dimension of the local commitment.

In fact, a total of 1,111 trees will be planted around the Czech city by ArcelorMittal. “We negotiated further tree planting in other parts of Ostrava, but also in the surrounding towns”, said Petr Baranek, Chief Green Officer of ArcelorMittal Ostrava.

But this ‘green’ day also left space for lots of fun: a concert with a Czech rock singer, competitions for both children and adults, to name a few of the activities available at the event. A perfect start for this exciting project!

Don’t miss anything about this green initiative! To stay tuned, check out the tree planting counter on www.prozelenouostravu.cz.

I was very happy to learn that MY company shares a “green” passion that means so much to me. I have planted 178 trees this year and nearly that many last year.

This action speaks volumes about the true nature of the steel industry. Because the production of steel is a stimulus to so many other supporting industries and our raw materials come from Mother Earth, there is nothing more appropriate than to surround our industrial sites with trees and vegetation.

In essence, I am trying to encourage our company to sew many more environmental seeds as we prosper. It will benefit us all.
