The ArcelorMittal Foundation is very proud of our partnership with Habitat for Humanity and we are working together with them to look for ways to expand this partnership into other countries. Currently, we are not working with Habitat for Humanity in Liberia but that does not mean that we are not actively supporting the development of the three counties that could be affected by our future operations there.

Some of our social projects in Liberia include:

· Running 3 schools, from primary to senior high, as well as an adult literacy centre. We employ 36 local teachers and at present time, 1,250 students are enrolled at our schools.

· Operating 2 hospitals in Yekepa and Buchanan and in 2009 we treated over 11,500 people, including employees, contractors and local residents.

· Opening 2 modern markets in Grand Bassa County. The markets were dedicated in Siahn and St John River communities and are an important step forward in the economic growth of the County.

You are right to warn about possible confusion between ArcelorMittal’s commercial interests in steel construction and humanitarian aid. This is why the steel housing concept we are developing with Habitat for Humanity is specifically designed for social purposes, and consequently very simple and affordable.

The solution must be decent and sustainable however, and follow all applicable safety standards and regulations, since it engages ArcelorMittal’s reputation. This will demonstrate that steel is a flexible material that can be used for a full range of applications.

It would be nice to see humanitarian efforts.But overlap in aid activities should be avoided.Low quality or rejected structural steel can be effectively used for these activities.
