Habitat for Humanity – First beneficiaries of housing projectLow-income families from Romania, Argentina and Costa Rica are beginning to see the fruits of the partnership between the ArcelorMittal Foundation and NGO Habitat for Humanity, which was signed in April 2008. So far, 12 houses have been partially built in Argentina and Costa Rica, and 54 homes have been renovated in Romania after flood damage.

Thanks to the financial contribution of the ArcelorMittal Foundation, Habitat for Humanity is building and rehabilitating homes in the 3 countries selected for the first phase of this housing project. Only 4 months after the signature of the partnership, the following results have been achieved:

  • In Galati County, Romania, 54 homes have been fully renovated after flood damage
  • Near Buenos Aires, in Argentina, 10 new homes will be constructed. To date, 2 homes have been partially built, with completion planned for September 2008 at the latest. A further 8 will be completed between October 2008 and March 2009
  • In San Ramón, Costa Rica, 25 homes will also be constructed. To date, 10 homes have almost been built, with completion date first week of September, 2008 and a further 15 are planned to be completed by the end of 2008

The contract signed with the NGO involves also the elaboration of a steel intensive low-cost housing solution. The concept and design of a prototype, named ‘Casa Buna’, has already taken place, and the prototype will be built in Romania by the end of October.

Isn’t it rewarding to see how good initiatives provide great results?

It would be nice to see humanitarian efforts. But overlap in aid activities should be avoided.Low quality or rejected structural steel can be effectively used for these activities.

You are right to warn about possible confusion between ArcelorMittal’s commercial interests in steel construction and humanitarian aid. This is why the steel housing concept we are developing with Habitat for Humanity is specifically designed for social purposes, and consequently very simple and affordable.

The solution must be decent and sustainable however, and follow all applicable safety standards and regulations, since it engages ArcelorMittal’s reputation. This will demonstrate that steel is a flexible material that can be used for a full range of applications.

    Dear Wendy Jackson,

Thank you for your message. We would be very happy to help you, however our Foundation only intervenes in places where the ArcelorMittal Group is present.

Where is your school project located ?

    Kind regards,

    The ArcelorMittal Foundation team

when will Liberia begin to see the fruits of the partnership between ArcelorMittal?

I also vote for this partnership to fructify for Liberia too- a country where ArcelorMittal is making large investment

Thank you both for your comments,

The ArcelorMittal Foundation is very proud of our partnership with Habitat for Humanity and we are working together with them to look for ways to expand this partnership into other countries. Currently, we are not working with Habitat for Humanity in Liberia but that does not mean that we are not actively supporting the development of the three counties that could be affected by our future operations there.

Some of our social projects in Liberia include:

    · Running 3 schools, from primary to senior high, as well as an adult literacy centre. We employ 36 local teachers and at present time, 1,250 students are enrolled at our schools.

    · Operating 2 hospitals in Yekepa and Buchanan and in 2009 we treated over 11,500 people, including employees, contractors and local residents.

    · Opening 2 modern markets in Grand Bassa County. The markets were dedicated in Siahn and St John River communities and are an important step forward in the economic growth of the County.

    Thank you for your interest,

Asier Marquina. Africa and Western Europe Project Manager.

    ArcelorMittal Foundation
