Steel in design
I am very proud to showcase steel in art for this episode. It is the side of steel that people do not always see and we forget how beautiful steel is in art and design. In this episode we show examples of steel in design in the ArcelorMittal Gallery at the Guggenheim Museum with Richard Serra’s work, in the building itself, and in home appliances. Sharing how steel makes our lives easier is one of the most satisfying aspects of my job. It is in our homes, in our offices, in our kitchens, at our fingertips. I enjoy working in communication because it requires a lot of creativity and allows me to meet so many people through so many different projects.
Renowned sculptor, Richard Serra, was always fascinated with steel after working in a steel factory when he was young. For many years he worked with ArcelorMittal in Germany to build his bold spirit sculptures. For years the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao offered him the space in the biggest gallery for a permanent exhibition of his work and as ArcelorMittal was already a Patron of the Museum, it made sense for us to sponsor this exhibition. To produce his monumental sculptures he needs an old fashioned rolling mill which he found at our facility in Germany. Richard has shown how steel can be beautiful and artistic and we are very proud of our collaboration with him.

. Two articles: ‘Steel in Design’ and ‘Stainless steel in swimming pool’ have attracted my concern over use of steel in many more innovative ways and it must be much beyond regular commercial use which are in general in common people’s mind.
As a civil engineer I was using it as a structural component. But when I was asked by my Managing Director (of Rourkela Steel Plant[RSP],Orissa)to design an entrance gate for the main building, I was thrilled and finally it has become a landmark in Rourkela, Orissa, India. Thereafter MD gave me a number of opportunity to design structures and monuments made of steel, produced by RSP and each of these structures are now the bright images of RSP. The name of my MD is Dr. Sanak Mishra who is CEO, Greenfield Projects, India of ArcelorMittal.
So INNOVATION is the “call of the day” to take a big leap in the direction of making steel more popular and who else can be the flag-bearer other than our company ArcelorMittal.
I have been directed by Mr. Vijay Bhatnagar, CEO India to introduce more and more steel for all our forthcoming works in the Green field Projects in Orissa and Jharkhand, India. I have designed Public Toilet and Bus-stop shelters using steel and stainless steel.
However it is high time to deswign more of such common facilities in steel in modular forms and these may be made available of the shelf.

It is quite amazing to see how steel can be found in sculptures, swimming pools, structural components in construction, bus stops or even toilets! I just read that ArcelorMittal is the leading steel supplier for sanitary ware in Europe.
