Brazil: Volunteer work with planning – A recipe for success
It’s rather uncommon to apply a management and planning system to social projects, especially in volunteer activities – unless we are referring to volunteers in Brazil’s João Monlevade unit, in the state of Minas Gerais. A management system is an essential part of their volunteer work routine… and the Assistance to Children group reaps the fruits of such planning!
From the beginning, Assistance to Children channeled its actions to a Daycare Centre known as Creche Luz aos Pequeninos, which used to operate out of a rented house, until 3 years ago. Then, volunteers faced a hurdle: the owner wanted his house back.
A new centre-owned place was needed and land was found. Several social actors contributed to the construction of a 320m2 Daycare Centre.
Everything solved? No: Once it was finalised, local mothers would not transfer their children to it, because it was located too far away. Another house was rented in the original neighborhood, for 60 children, and more room was provided for 70 additional children.
The volunteer work with planning will provide more results: This project includes the construction of a new building for dental and medical consultation, one auditorium and two rooms for courses of the Humanizar Project: local mothers and teenagers will have the chance to learn manual labour as an alternative to increase their homes income.
Collaboration: Rita Giselle Platilha Pinheiro, Fundação ArcelorMittal Brasil, and João Bosco Reis da Silva, ArcelorMittal Foundation

“The volunteer work with planning will provide more results”- Yes I agree to its basics. Particularly for social works it is required to be more of innovative to suit to a particular location / neighbourhood but of course with lot of homework. Nobody should take even a step forward without assessing the probable consiquences. At times the process is very slow. Be it, we have gain confidence of the people after analysing their need.
I congratulate all the volunteers in Brazil’s João Monlevade unit. I like to have more communication with them for our Orissa and Jharkhand projects. All the best.
