montsaintmichel-lr.jpgMont Saint Michel, a jewel of French architecture and UNESCO heritage, is little by little becoming attached to the coast by sand. It became clear years ago that an ambitious plan had to be made to preserve the beauty of Mont Saint Michel, to ensure that it recovers pride of place as the central feature of its bay.

Following several years of research to find a long-term and environmental-friendly solution, the works of the restoration project of the Mont Saint Michel maritime character started in 2005. ArcelorMittal, through its Industeel subsidiary, is now playing a role in this ambitious project, by providing stainless steel plates for the flood gates system in the new dam. Designed to provide effective flushing of the Cuesnon, the dam will release water on the ebb tide to clear sand from around the Mont.

Far from being an irreversible environmental eyesore to upstage the Mont, the modifications caused by the ongoing works will blend unobtrusively into the background.
