princesselisabethstation.JPGArcelorMittal collaborated with the International Polar Foundation to establish the Princess Elisabeth station in the Antarctic in March 2008. ArcelorMittal contributed to the construction of the station by providing the envelope of the Antarctic base, which comprises almost 25 tonnes of stainless steel. From the wide range of ArcelorMittal stainless products, an austenitic stainless steel suited to extreme conditions (very low temperatures, extreme changes in temperature and violent winds) was selected for this project.

Using specialised building design and materials, energy efficient appliances and sound insulation techniques, running exclusively on renewable wind and solar energies, Princess Elisabeth station is the first « zero emission » Antartic research station. The leaders of the project have managed to take a pioneering step forward in the domain of Sustainable Development.
