Pierre Engel: profile of a commitment to steel

workshop-1.jpgMeet Pierre Engel, who has a passion for architecture and art. And this passion, combined with his experience and all of his competencies, gives him a strong recognition in the building sector.

Pierre Engel says that the simple reason behind this connection to steel is that he started his professional life at 16 as a worker in the steel construction industry. He returned to his studies after working at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, where he obtained his PhD in steel design in the UK. “In fact,” he says, “the steps of my life were always in the direction. I don’t think I could imagine my life without steel!”

Pierre loves to take pictures of art and architecture, especially steel architecture and especially under construction. “They are useful for me and my colleagues, and help to convince clients that steel is the best material for building,” he says.

At ArcelorMittal, he works in Building & Construction Support where he is the person who has the best relations with international architects. A few times a year, Pierre writes articles in architectural journals on outstanding steel architecture because he believes that we (steel people) have a commitment to promote our culture everywhere.

Within this mindset, Pierre also has taught for 18 years at the Paris School of Architecture. “I think it is important to give young architects another view of the construction world with steel,” he explains. “ Don’t forget the old Chinese saying: ‘If you see one year ahead plant rice, if you see twenty year ahead plant trees, if you see further, educate people…’”

    Bonjour,
    Je suis tjs en Guadeloupe,
    J’ai vu, dans le bulletin de liaison de l’AFPS, dont je suis membre, que tu as participé à un séminaire sur les atouts de l’acier dans la construction parasismique.
    Ce qui m’a permis d’apprendre que tu travailles à Arcelor-Mittal.
    Je serais ravi d’avoir de plus amples nouvelles de ta part.
