‘Collect a can’, a programme benefiting both the environment and the local communities
‘Collect a can’ is a non-profit initiative established in 1993, in which ArcelorMittal South Africa owns a 60% stake. It supports the collection of metal cans, the separation of tin from steel and the sale of recuperated materials. By managing its operations and cost structures at optimum levels, the project ensures its long-term stability.
The project benefits two important areas of corporate responsibility. It first benefits the environment as the recovery rate of cans in South Africa has gone from 18% to 67% in less than 15 years. This is even more than in Europe or North America. ‘Collect a can‘ also has a positive effect on communities as it employs 37,000 people on a regular basis and therefore provide revenues to people in South Africa and in some neighbouring countries.
