Sustainability of the steel spirit
When you work in Communications in a large company like ours, you get the opportunity to learn many stories and to meet many people. Some of them really touch your heart. Grant Abriel, the man in the picture, is one of them.
Everything started when Margaret Wells, our colleague in Canada, contacted us to know if a retiree was eligible for the ‘Test your Knowledge of Steel’ quiz of our internal magazine boldspirit. His name is Grant Abriel, he is 81 years old and he worked in Dofasco for 44 years. He knew all the answers but as the test is intended for active employees… Could he participate?
Given his interest, the answer was of course, yes. What a surprise when Margaret sent the responses to the quiz, just a few hours later: Mr Abriel had answered the quiz in only 10 minutes and he was so happy that he drove all the way to Margaret’s office to give her the paper in hand. You should have seen it: at the side of each answer, he had included a note such as “I learnt this while working in the cold mill lab”, or “I learnt this from my grandfather when I was 10 or 11 years old”. And of course, all of his answers were right. What a wealth of knowledge!
Dear Mr Abriel: we do not know if you will win the prize of a trip to South Africa, but with your example you have already won our recognition for your enthusiasm, your deep knowledge of steel and for remaining active during your retirement.
