A very special Family Day Holiday
In Canada, the third Monday in February is the Family Day Holiday. Our colleague Richard Carr spent it hanging from a rope 20 meters down in a well and saving a girl’s life!
Richard, along with fellow volunteer fire-fighter and wife, Elaine Elliott, arrived on the scene in Cayuga, a small community just south of Hamilton, Ontario to find a nine-year-old girl who had fallen into a well and was clinging to a pipe in near freezing water nearly 20 metres (60 feet) from the surface.
Richard got into a dry suit and was lowered down into the well. When he got to the girl she was in good spirits, he said, and wanted to know if they could get her out in time for school the next day.
The pair was pulled from the well by other fire-fighters and police officers, and the girl was treated for non-life threatening injuries, including hypothermia. A round of applause for Richard and some of our other colleagues who also helped in the rescue!
