Health & Safety Day - Together a step forward Today March 6, 2008 we are celebrating a very special day: the second worldwide corporate Health and Safety Day, an internal effort to promote Health and Safety as the number one priority for all of us.

So what are we doing today all around the world to show our commitment with Health and Safety? I can tell you that there is a wide variety of activities taking place right now in all our plants and offices, here in Luxembourg and in all the other plants worldwide: launch of the day by senior management, view of our Health and Safety Day video, trainings, shop floor audits (don’t know what that is? Read below!), reward of good initiatives, commitment with action plans… and even some rhythmical initiatives: yes, because our creative colleagues in South Africa came out with the Health and Safety song! Have you heard it already?

I also liked the favourite quote of the Cold Roll Products Safety team at ArcelorMittal Hamilton, Dofasco Facility, in Canada: “Safety doesn’t happen by accident. Practice is required.” I think that sums up what this day is about pretty well. And what are your views on Health and Safety Day? Do you think it helps to make people be more aware of dangers? Tell us your opinion!

Have been thru the H&S day in the ArcelorMittal plant in Prague – HaironvilleVikam, Czech Republic today.
Good to know that safety is priority to AM and its also cool to know so many people participate on the same thing. The very same day!

My name is Fábio Crispim – Infrastructure Engineer (T.I). I’m from Brazil and I work at “Arcelor Mittal Sâo Paulo Serviços”.

I believe that H&S Day helps to make people more aware of dangers. ArcelorMittal each day more respected the life.

Today is a day very important for our family and us. The H & S Day makes everyone to rethink about what have more important, “the life”.

Our workforces allow see risk situation, inside and outside ArcelorMittal, never see before.

I’m planning to work another branch of the ArcelorMittal out side Brazil, and I’m sure, I’ll meet a safety environment for my new colleagues and me.

“Thank you for opportunities to sums up more a day in my life and my colleagues.”

I offered some support to the Health and Safety Commitee this year. It was the first time I was involved in a Health and Safety Day and I could not believe how much work goes into the planning, both at a centralised level and then at a local level. It is pretty amazing if you imagine that this is an event that is simultaneously organised across more than 60 countries and in so many languages. Finally, after all the last minute preparations (and there were many leading right up to almost the last minute) when the final day arrived I was sick! And many people teased me about the irony of being sick on Health and Safety Day. I am so dissappointed to have missed it and would love to hear people’s first hand accounts of how the day unfolded in their locations. Help me live this day vicariously through your activities! What commitments did everyone out there make and how will the events of March 6th 2008 help our Company to move take a step forward?

One of the most common issues regarding safety is that complacency almost always sets in.

So anything that reinforces the need to be ever vigilant, with regards to safety, must be considered beneficial.

Safety needs to be a team supported activity. Whether your work place has 3 or 300,000 employees. Without the support of your peers and mentors, it is doomed to fail. Thank you for the leadership support ArcelorMittal.
