Diversion or river Gomjenica, Bosnia The ArcelorMittal mines in Prijedor, situated in the north-west of Bosnia and Herzegovina, lived a special day on February 19, 2008: on that date, the first step of the diversion of river Gomjenica was successfully achieved. This diversion will allow activities to start in a new pit containing 45 million tonnes of iron ore, thus increasing the mine’s life by 20 years.

The river was flowing through the Buvač Pit, which was the first hurdle that needed to be resolved in order to start exploitation of the pit. The works involved for 2.6 km included buying out the land, the removal of earth to cut the channel, the placement of the limestone on the bank face, the installation of filter plastic and the vegetation of the banks till now. The diversion will now continue for 1.6 more kilometres.

ArcelorMittal Prijedor has been a member of the Group since August 2004 and employs 700 people. Mining in this metal-genetic area of Bosnia and Herzegoniva has a long tradition – it has existed for more than 2,500 years!
