How does ArcelorMittal Galati get 10 tonnes of its hot rolled steel to a customer in India? How does ArcelorMittal Dunkirk receive its raw materials? The answer lies in the Shipping department of ArcelorMittal, which looks after 100 million tonnes of cargo every year.

The Shipping department of ex-Mittal Steel coordinated 26 million tonnes of cargo. Post merger, ArcelorMittal looks after 100 million tonnes of cargo – that’s almost four times the responsibility!

Headed by Mr Viral Vora, VP, Head of the Shipping department, the team sits in London, with additional representation across Europe. Due to consolidation of the team, in 2008, ArcelorMittal’s Shipping department will become the biggest dry cargo charterer in the world.

The team works to provide solutions to sea transportation across the Group. Thanks to the department’s expert knowledge and skill, ArcelorMittal saved US$1 billion on transportation costs in 2007.

I remember Mr Aditya Mittal giving us glimpses of the shipping business when the India press team went to Luxembourg in November 2007. Its a rather unknown facet of ArcelorMittal. Raises my interest.
