Award for lightweight steel gas cylinder

ArcelorMittal and steel gas bottle supplier Liotard were awarded runner-up in the Swedish Steel Prize 2007 for a new steel gas cylinder, which is only about half the weight of the traditional steel gas cylinder. The ceremony took place in Stockholm on November 29, 2007.
In many countries where gas cylinders are used for cooking and heating, housekeepers traditionally needed well-developed muscles. For over half a century they have been using 13 kg steel gas cylinders containing 13 kg of propane or butane. Carrying a 26 kg gas bottle up the stairs was a daunting task…
ArcelorMittal R&D Industry Gent and Liotard were convinced that they could produce lighter gas cylinders by switching to new high-strength steels. They used a dual-phase steel combining very good formability and high strength. It is easier to handle and less expensive to produce.
The new steel cylinder weighs 6.3 kg and can hold 10 kg of gas. It successfully passed stringent testing to guarantee full safety.
