ArcelorMittal committed to the future of Liberia

On December 12, Mr Mittal visited Monrovia, capital of Liberia, where he met President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. “We are here to assist,” Mr Mittal said after a joint meeting of government and ArcelorMittal representatives at the Foreign Ministry.
Mr Mittal announced that ArcelorMittal is increasing its investment in Liberia, from US $1-billion to US $1.5-billion dollars, because peace and democracy have now returned to the country. He said he was in Liberia to renew the Group’s commitment to the future of the country and praised President Sirleaf for the progress of the government since she assumed the leadership of the country. President Ellen Johnson thanked the Group’s delegation for the spirit of true partnership between ArcelorMittal and Liberia.
This visit comes nearly a year after the signing of an agreement between ArcelorMittal and Liberia. The agreement includes among other benefits the renovation of the port of Buchanan, the rehabilitation of the 270 kilometer railway from Buchanan to Yekepa and the development of iron ore mines in Nimba. Over the life of the project, 20,000 direct and indirect jobs will be created for the citizens of Liberia.

This visit by Mr. Mittal has helped the organization in depicting its seriousness and commitment to the country. The media and the government circles in Liberia have been abound with the praise of this development. The speedy implementation of the project work will be a great showcase for the Govt. too, as it will help actualise at least one of the major expectations of the people, while it tries hard to do more for its citizens in time to come.
