The Slab Casting Knowledge Management Programme (KMP) event at ArcelorMittal Paris headquarters took place from June 26 to 28. The sessions addressed issues critical for managers of casting operations starting with safety, where different shops shared their experiences on how to make the working environment safer for those on the shop floor.

Topics of the meeting included best practices to predict and prevent breakouts, optimize mold, segments and tundish life and address quality issues. The meeting also reviewed leading practices across the group in caster automation as well as discussing new caster projects at different stages of development.

Apart from the many valuable ideas each participant is taking back to their operations, workgroups have been created to pursue some issues further, such as establishing protective gear safety standards in the shop floor.

Many participants at the KMP event were meeting for the first time, especially those from different continents. It is certain that, with the similar managerial and technical challenges faced ahead, the many new friendships and networks created during the event will become an invaluable source of support going forward.
