Improved Health and Safety in Kazakhstan
On June 15 2007, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) agreed to provide ArcelorMittal Temirtau in east central Kazakhstan with a $100 million loan. The funds will support ArcelorMittal’s plans to modernise the coal mines to bring them in line with international best practice in terms of Health and Safety standards.
ArcelorMittal Temirtau is a fully integrated steelworks with an annual capacity of 5.5 million tonnes. The company will use the EBRD funds for various projects aiming at improving safety standards and for staff training programmes. This is further proof that ArcelorMittal is committed to making Health and Safety its number one priority for the company across the globe.
EBRD President Jean Lemierre welcomed the efforts of the ArcelorMittal Group to improve the safety of their mines in Kazakhstan. “New safety standards will be set,” he added. Narendra Chaudhary, CEO ArcelorMittal AACIS (Asia Africa and CIS) said: “This is another step in our extremely constructive cooperation with the EBRD aiming at developing our coal mines in Kazakhstan into world class operations.”
