ArcelorMittal has partially begun production at its new 700,000 tonnes/year merchant bar plant on the periphery of Zaragoza, northern Spain.

Months ago, ArcelorMittal decided to transfer production from its former plant in central Zaragoza to a new site on the outskirts of the city, the switch enabling it to increase capacity by 400,000 t/y. The new production site has now all the necessary equipment to fully operate, including an electric furnace, which was taken from an idle group plant in Belgium, a ladle furnace and two rolling mills.

This year, ArcelorMittal estimates it will produce some 300,000 t/y of merchant bars at the new Zaragoza plant, a figure that could increase next year, depending on market conditions.
