Mittal Steel South Africa is to begin construction of two new Direct Reduction (DR) kilns at its Vanderbijlpark plant at a cost of 840,000 US Dollars to increase its liquid steel capacity by approximately 250,000 tonnes per year. This will increase the number of kilns at Vanderbijlpark from four to six.

Up to 750 indirect jobs will be created during construction. When completed, 110 sustainable jobs will be created for the operation and maintenance of the kilns.

“These additional kilns will not only enable us to add value to our local raw materials, but allow us to capture the growth of the South African domestic market and reduce the market’s reliance on imported material,” says Rick Reato, chief executive officer of Mittal Steel South Africa.

“It is strategically important for us to build these kilns and we are also committed to ensuring that we improve our country’s skills base through the transfer of knowledge from our main contractors.”
